What is the play about?

Joe Landry’s adaptation of Frank Capra’s 1946 film is set in a 1940s radio studio high above New York City at Christmastime, where a company of actors gathers to perform the story live on the air. A foley artist creates sound effects onstage, and holiday carols fill the commercial breaks. The actors play dozens of characters between them, bringing the town of Bedford Falls to life.

It tells the story of George Bailey, “a man who has spent his life putting the needs of others before his own,” according to the production’s official website. The film was based on Philip Van Doren Stern’s 1943 short story “The Greatest Gift” and earned five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. This year marks the film’s 80th anniversary, BroadwayWorld notes.

Landry’s stage version premiered in 1996 at Connecticut’s Stamford Center for the Arts and has since become one of the most produced plays in the country. The Broadhurst engagement is its first Broadway production.

Who is the creative team behind the Broadway production?

Four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks directs. The design team includes Tony-winning costume and scenic designer Santo Loquasto, lighting designer Kenneth Posner and sound designer Palmer Hefferan, with music direction by Andy Einhorn. Wagner Johnson Productions is the general manager.

The producing team includes Seaview, Wagner Johnson Productions, No Guarantees Productions, Broadway & Beyond Theatricals, The Shubert Organization and The John Gore Organization, among others, Playbill reports.
